Angolan journalist Hariana Veras-Victoria, the White House Chief Correspondent for Africa, has officially launched « Peace for DRC Now, » a global awareness campaign aimed at drawing international attention to the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and rallying support for lasting peace.
Speaking at the campaign’s official launch, Veras-Victoria described the initiative as an urgent call to action to end more than three decades of violence that have devastated millions of Congolese civilians through armed conflict, forced displacement, and persistent instability.
« As an African journalist, my responsibility is to shine a light on stories that too often fail to receive the global attention they deserve, » she said. « Peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is not simply an African issue—it is a human issue. It is a global issue. »
Veras-Victoria emphasized the DRC’s critical role in the global economy, noting that the country’s vast reserves of cobalt and other strategic minerals power many of the technologies people rely on every day, including smartphones, electric vehicles, computers, and renewable energy systems.
« The Congo powers the world, » she said. « Yet while the world benefits from its natural resources, millions of Congolese families continue to suffer the consequences of conflict. »
Her remarks underscored what she described as the moral responsibility of the international community to recognize the human cost behind the global demand for critical minerals and to support meaningful efforts toward peace and stability in the region.
The Peace for DRC Now campaign encourages people around the world to participate by recording a 30-second video stating « Peace for DRC Now, » posting it across social media platforms—including Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, and TikTok—and using the hashtag #PeaceForDRCNow while tagging Veras-Victoria to amplify the campaign’s reach.
According to the veteran journalist, every post, every share, and every voice contributes to breaking the silence surrounding one of the world’s longest-running humanitarian crises.
The initiative also serves as a broader appeal for peace, justice, freedom, and human dignity. It calls on the international community to listen more closely to the voices of the Congolese people, stand in solidarity with communities affected by conflict, and strengthen collective efforts to build a future where peace prevails over violence.
« Together, we can ensure that the world no longer remains silent in the face of this tragedy, » Veras-Victoria said. « Together, we can amplify the voices of those who deserve to be heard and help restore hope to a nation that has endured far too much suffering. »
